Wasco was established in 1897, when the Santa Fe Railroad first began constructing its line through the area. The area was originally called “Deweyville,” but after an early settler named William Bonham from Wasco County, Oregon realized there was already a town by that name, he suggested changing the name to Wasco. In 1900, Wasco was officially recognized as a town by the U.S. Postal Service. In 1918, cotton was first cultivated there, and by 1945, the city had been incorporated.
