On July 14, 1869, the town of Delano was established as a railroad town. This was due to the fact that Delano served as the southern terminus for trains traveling from San Francisco and further north. The Southern Pacific Railroad officially bestowed the name in memory of Columbus Delano, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Postal service began in 1874 with the opening of the first office. As of 1913, Delano is an incorporated city.
